Fair Housing for Maintenance Professionals

Fair Housing is one of the most "trained" topics in our industry, but with ever increasing governmental focus, and settlements that are growing into the millions of dollars, this is a subject in which your employees can never be overtrained.

This half-day session is geared toward the maintenance technicians and other maintenance staff member, and those who would benefit from a great refresher course. The session will focus on understanding the law and how it affects all aspects of the property. Keeping in mind that our maintenance teams typically spend more time with our residents than management, it is very important they have a full understanding of the Federal Fair Housing Law.

We will discuss the protected classes, but will spend most of our time together focusing on resident relations and importance of proper communication and documentation.
At the end of either session, attendees will be able to understand each protected class, and how to use customer service techniques and terminology to reduce the chances of a Fair Housing investigation. Additionally, they will learn about the documentation necessary to assist should a Fair Housing investigation occur.

About the Speaker

Vicki Sharp, NALP, CAPS, CDPM, PMIC, brings over 40 years of property management experience to her audiences and clients.  After serving an enlistment in the US Army, Vicki began her career in the property management business as a leasing consultant.  She quickly rose through the ranks, and has worked with fee and owner managed portfolios, REITs, and management of Privatized Family Housing for all branches of the Armed Services.  Because Vicki has worked in virtually all positions within the property management field, she brings true "boots on the ground" experiences and ideas that are proven in the marketplace.

Vicki has written and presented seminars on industry related subjects for over 25 years.  Seminars include leasing, customer service, team management, and marketing, as well as special niche seminars geared toward maintenance performance and privatized military housing.  Referred to as entertraining, her seminars are presented in humorous, thought provoking styles that have challenged thousands of attendees to perform at their best levels.  She has also written many articles for trade publications across the nation.

As an instructor, Vicki has taught virtually all professional designation programs for the National Apartment Association (NAA).  She holds two NAA designations, the National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP), and the Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS).  She also holds PHMA’s Certified Defense Privatization Manager (CDPM) designation, and was one of the original authors of the program.  She is a Past President of the Austin Apartment Association (AAA), has served on the Board of Directors for the Texas Apartment Association (TAA), in addition to being a delegate for the NAA for over a decade.

Vicki was chosen as TAA’s 1997 Professional Designate of the Year, and has won the same award two times from AAA.  She has also won many awards for membership recruitment at the local, state and national level.  She is a very strong advocate for local association membership and participation.
